Biography

Rachel Meyers earned her B.F.A. in Drawing from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn , New York and is currently pursuing her M.F.A. in studio art at Jacksonville University in Jacksonville Florida. Inspired by impressionism, Neo Expressionism and Feminist art, she combines flowers, figures and expressive mark-making with her mastery of color to depict and redefine feminine objects, their history as symbols of sexuality and their significance in defining gender roles. Rachel currently lives in Central Florida.

Artist Statement

Flowers are embodied with aesthetic pleasure, femininity, and symbolic associations. Combining their visually enticing colors, shapes, and patterns with the associations of purity, pleasure and the power of Barbie Dolls trigger sensory responses and exemplify them as subversive signifiers. The dolls and doll parts juxtaposed in around and within the colorful and sexual forms generate questions about the objectification, cultural expectations and roles defined for women in society, Art, and literature throughout history. By creating these personal stories, I want to encourage the viewer to look at the chimeric nature of their own ideologies about sexuality and gender roles assigned to women.
